What Media Outlet is Right for You?

monkey-thinkingDo you ever wonder what’s going on in different news broadcasting shows? How do you know if the information they’re giving you is the ‘full’ truth? And among the many  news broadcasters which one is for you? Over the years, news has been spread through many ways (radio, newspaper, etc.) and now the most popular is through television and mobile devices. Do you ever wonder who’s in control and making all that money? Hopefully, after this reading, all your questions will have been answered and you will be able to pick a media outlet that suits you.

Some of the most influential media based industries include: GE, Newscorp, Disney, Viacom, Time Warner, and CBS . Not only are these ‘Media Giants’ the most influential, but they are also among the largest companies of their origin. Surprisingly, these six companies alone, control over  90% of the media. These major companies make over two hundred seventy-five billion dollars each year from consumers. It is said, that only 1% of people contain the largest amounts of wealth in the world. What affect do the companies have on our society with this media oligopoly of news broadcasting?  What we watch, actually has a lot to do with what kind of things we associate ourselves with. Television channels reach out to their audiences using specific commercials and advertisements. It may be hard to believe, but broadcasters can even influence us politically. Have you ever noticed how certain stations only promote specific politicians? This is a technique  they use persuade us to side with their own bias opinions.

Instead of being informative and just simply stating all the facts, the media often choses to take sides, revealing it’s producer’s bias opinions, to get a reaction out of its audience on the latest controversies. Most of these controversial topics, include stories that are blown out of proportion, including presidential elections, legalization of marijuana, immigration, and same-sex marriages.

An incident that recently occurred with Kim Davis emphasizes an example of a situation that was blown way out of proportion. Apparently, Kim was thrown in jail because she doesn’t feel it is right to give gay couples their marriage license. In her defense, Kim stated that it was against her religion and that she was only trying to uphold His [God’s] word. It seems pretty terrible to deny someone the right to marriage just because of their sexual preference, but on the other hand, would it be less terrible to betray your own religion and beliefs to accommodate someone else?   Who’s side are you on?

A) Many other same-sex marriage licenses have been thrown out after the Supreme Court’s ruling and no one was arrested for not issuing them. Why should Davis go when she was standing up for her beliefs and religion.

B) Same sex marriage is a constitutional right.. and is supposed to be a settled issue in America.

C) The Kentucky Trial Court Review’s Shannon Ragland wrote that Davis’ “conduct has terrorized not just her staff, but everyone that works in the courthouse.”, all just for a foolish mission aided by out-of-state charlatan lawyers trying to raise money for their ‘religious liberty’ mission.”

As we get closer and closerthr_trump_cover to the Presidential election, politics are being seen more frequently in the news. Headlines are sharing all the new possible candidates, therefor enabling  broadcasters to pick their vote and support these candidates already. With all the turmoil going on right now, where do you fall on the political spectrum?

A) America does not want a pro
fessional politician with empty promises. They also do not want another Busch-Clinton race. So what do they want? Something new. Donald Trump is in the lead for the Republican nominee. He knows how to run a business and many think he can run the country.

B) Donald Trump… racist and xenophobic. He has a false remedy to solve immigration, a bigger wall. Trump continues to avoid controversial topics and more on how the most powerless people in America continue to pose a “threat” to America’s economic system.

C) Clinton speaks out about Trump’s lack of respect  for women and how he continues to send votes her way. Trump tweets back to insult her lack of truth and emotion.

What Topics Interest You the Most?

What kind of information are you interested in learning about? Different media outlets share what they think is the latest and greatest news. Some seem interesting and important while others just make you wonder ‘why are these even main headliners?’

A) “Louisiana homeowners watch gator crawl out of storm drain in middle of block.”

B) “Blood moon has some expecting end of the world.”

C)”Miley has learned nothing: Why her shots at Nicki Minaj were so tone-deaf.”

After thorough research on these three news outlets, I can conclude that Fox News is slightly bias towards the conservative wing, while others like Salon tend to be more liberal. I expected this from the start and found the evidence to support my initial hypothesis. While discussing politics, Salon talked mostly of Obama, Bidden, and Clinton, and Fox focused on Ben Carson and, of course, Donald Trump. To my surprise, CNN seemed to be the least biased network. They showed both sides of every story, which goes against their reputation, but it strengthened their ethos and took away their bias. Even though I thought I would agree more with Fox News, I later realized that CNN reached out to me more. The articles I chose appealed to me with pathos rather than ethos because there was not much credibility in their stories. I was overwhelmed with sadness reading about the officer whose killer was never caught, and I was angered as I read about the issue in China. Though these articles did not have the creditability to be believable or persuasive, it did move me emotionally.

While taking this quiz and reading over the information, you can infer which news broadcasting channel is right for you:

A answers related to Fox News. These responses are very conservative. There was some bias involved but not as much as other sites. This means you lean towards the republican side of politics and express their opinions and beliefs.

B answers represented CNN.  This site leaned more liberal rather than not. They stated the facts instead of opinions. When it came to politics, they made everyone look bad but when it came to other stories there was no side taken. This means that you care about what the truth is and have no interest in bias.

C corresponded with Salon. This is a strong liberal site. They focus not just on the political and breaking news but also on the popular, urban culture. This means you care about your opinion and are not afraid to step up and share it.
