Gun control dates back to the 1920’s, when the federal government first began to enforce laws pertaining to gun policy. Recently it has been a topic widely discussed by many political figures. Obama Lists Regrets – Again: Failure to Secure Gun Control Still #1, is the title of a Breitbart News article written by AWR Hawkins. This article argues that Obama during his presidency failed to secure gun control and lower crime rates. On January 4th, 2017 Barack Obama addressed his “exit letter” to the people of the United States, this letter had a list of the top regrets of his presidency on it. Sitting at number one on that list was his “failure to Secure Gun Control”.
AWR Hawkins supports the idea that Obama “failed to secure gun control”, by taking pieces of Barack Obama’s original exit letter and including them in the article. Obama in his original address says “there’s still so much I wish we’d been able to do, from enacting gun safety measures to protect more of our kids and our cops from mass shootings like Newtown” this is a key point that Hawkins uses to support the argument. Hawkins also says that it is notable that no gun law would have prevented the Newtown, Connecticut attack. This is supported by the claim that it is especially notable that the gun control plans of President Obama, Joe Biden, and Joe Manchin that were pushed in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook attack would have done nothing to prevent the attack from happening.
Ad Hominem is a logical fallacy in which one person attacks another’s character, identity, or something else not relating to the subject, during an argument. The author of this article attacks Obama by bringing up only his failures in office. Hawkins at no point credits Obama for his role, instead he focuses on rebutting the point that Obama failed to secure gun control. Hawkins also states that many attacks occurred after the Newtown shooting, and could have been prevented with one stricter gun control policy that would mandate the disarming of law abiding citizens in certain places. Obama pushed for stricter background checks on those who were purchasing guns. Many of the acts of violence that occur with guns, are guns that are not registered or have been obtained illegally.
After using Voyant tools to further analyze this article, I noticed that the most common words used in this article are Guns, Obama, and Sandy Hook. The author compares Obamas gun control policies with the Sandy Hook attack as this is the focus of the article.
On January 4th 2016, Barack Obama tweeted “Each year, more than 30,000 American lives are cut short by guns – two-thirds coming from suicides. Too many Americans have lost loved ones”. President Obama uses the Pathos approach as he is appealing to emotion by stating that many people have lost loved ones. He is trying to bring what he typed to into perspective for the readers. This appeals to the emotions of readers because suicide is a very sensitive topic. He also uses a fact that is backed up by research done that says that more than 30,000 American lives are taken by guns annually.
